and hav...curtis
i've wandered over here a few times
and have admired the range of your interests from photography to food to books to people
also
the clarity of your critiques

i must admit ignorance where waugh is concerned
i've tried to read some things but can't get very far
the aristocratic pretense comes on too strong and i can't bear it
i've read quite a lot of graham greene most recently 'the heart of the matter"
and i find him as a journalist bearing up under wierd and painful social circumstances and stumbling along in his faith a much more believable 20th century convert

a short story writer (and 2 novels) you might find interesting is JF Powers -- i got to know him before he died here at st johns
he spoke of waugh on more than one occasion - but he was a great admirer of katherine anne porter and of course flannery o'connor - and it seems to me he exemplifies something closer to the heart of real lived roman catholic life with all the doubt and humor wrapped in
his wife
Betty Wahl Powers also wrote a couple novels

when brideshead hit the screen in the early days of my monastic life there were monks glued to the screen
and i must confess
i didn't get it
having grown up in montana in a hardscrabble sort of 20th century american catholicism lots of irish hard drinkin priests from Butte MT
although
there was some irish elitist catholicism there that came down from the likes of marcus daly and the big mining concerns

here comes everybody

i may have a hard cover of a Powers novel maybe 2 around
if you'd like to peddle them
i could send you one or 2
let me know
given your library i wouldn't doubt that you have some of his stuff already

j

yeah those stress therapy routines might need some refinement in iraq
can we spell dysfunctionjhhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10043530995274885830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1660090614793277371.post-6480904335393338142009-05-13T11:12:00.000-07:002009-05-13T11:12:00.000-07:00Yeah, those brave young boys in valor and courage-...Yeah, those brave young boys in valor and courage--lots of 'em come home shaking and frazzled from PTSD--

then there are the war wounds, paraplegics--

or the body bags.

Boy is war fun.Curtis Favillehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06213075853354387634noreply@blogger.com
